The 485 series was introduced in 1968 as a limited express train compatible with three power sources, DC and AC 5060Hz, based on the previously introduced 481 and 483 series. It was manufactured for a long period until 1979 and was active in electrified sections nationwide as a representative limited express train of JNR. The 489 series was introduced in 1971 as a train based on the 485 series, with measures for passing between Yokokawa and Karuizawa on the Shinetsu Main Line. The Sashi 481 and 489 type were dining cars of the 485 and 489 series, with a driver's cab at both ends, windows and taillights on the end, and headlights on the roof.
